Focusing on social emotional health is an upstream effort to mitigate and prevent serious mental health issues in the future. However, it is not nearly upstream enough.

What’s worse is that stress, anxiety and depression act as attention thieves. When the fear center of our brain is activated, it suppresses the part of our brain most able to fully attend to what is in front of us and to connect with others.

I find it heartening to know that practicing social and emotional health in our own homes, even in small ways, can lay the groundwork for a return to civility and connection.
MINDFUL
A growing body of science, including the work of Harvard University’s Center for the Developing Child, has found that toxic stress can impede healthy development, literally changing children’s brains and affecting their capacity to absorb even the best instruction. Mindfulness is a much-needed life preserver in this otherwise troubling picture.

If we aren't paying attention to our own behavior and attitudes, we actually do harm. When what we say and what we do don't match, kids experience incongruence. This confusion causes them to lose trust or check-out.

The most important thing parents can do is help their children form a coherent narrative—a story that makes sense.
